Hey! You made it! You are planning your trip to Agra, you probably will visit the Taj Mahal. So, the best thing to do is find a hotel at a walking distance from it, right? Well, it depends on what you want.
I personally chose to stay at the Hotel Atulyya Taj. The hotel is accessible money-wise, and you can walk 5 minutes and be there. If you are planning on visiting really early, that’s great. I felt really safe in the hotel, and the food (Indian) was really good! The breakfast is okay.
That said, it is not quite the comfort that I expected from the pictures. It has a rooftop, from which you can see the Taj, and that’s pretty cool.
The thing with Agra, is that there is not much in terms of restaurants, cafes, shops… Maybe that will change one day. But in the meantime, I wouldn’t stay there for more than a day. I stayed for 2 whole days, and it felt long.
If I were you, I would wake up early, go to the Taj around 5am, then go to Agra Fort, and get some coffee at the Oberoi Hotel to relax at the end of the day.

The Taj was commissioned by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and he asked the tomb of his favorite and unfortunately deceased wife to be placed in the center of the white marble mausoleum. The whole area was finished in 1653. He had other projects in mind, like building a black Taj Mahal on the other site of the river, but it was never done. The Taj has some semi-precious stones and is a UNESCO World Heritage.
Travel-wise, if your hotel can arrange a pick-up from the hotel or airport, I would do that! I never felt unsafe but I feel like men were insistent and pushy to sell things or give you a ride. More than in other parts of India that I have seen so far. If you don’t want something, be confident and say so! If you seem to hesitate, they won’t leave you alone.
For the Taj, I think you should go early and take some time to explore the gardens. If you look closely, you will spot some green parrots! 🙂

Agra Fort
Agra fort, or the red fort, was built in the 16th century near the Taj Mahal, on the Yamuna riverside. It is a really nice place to visit. I would recommend to explore it on the same day as the Taj since they are so close to one another. It is a symbol of strength, and it was used by the government during the Mughal rule. From one side, you will see balconies and windows that will give you a great view of the Taj. It is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage.
