ABOUT

Louise is German, she works as a self-employed translator and speaks German, English and Italian (though not yet fluently).

When and why did you move to Florence?

I moved to Florence in 2022, to move in with my fiancé.

Moving to Florence

What is Florence famous for?

It is said to be “an open-air museum and the birthplace of the Renaissance.”

What surprised you about life in Florence when you first arrived?

Having spent a lot of time in different countries in Europe (which, despite their different languages and traditions, have many things in common), I was surprised about the major difference between Italy and other European countries.

How to find a job in Florence?

Since I am self-employed, working in “home office” I was able to continue my job, but I heard it’s difficult to find a job.

How did you find an apartment in Florence?

Via a local real estate agency. Rents here are high.

How did you get set up?

Luckily my fiancé helped me with everything. It’s not easy if you don’t speak Italian fluently.

Was it difficult for you to get medical insurance in Florence?

I was told that it supposedly takes a year of living in Italy before you are able to apply for medical insurance, so I decided to keep my previous insurance.

Living in Florence

What did you bring with you?

Everything, since I plan on staying here “forever”.

What should people consider before deciding to move to Florence?

If possible, go on a trial period first, before moving completely.

What are the main differences between Italians and Germans?

The mentality and the way of driving. Italians are very family oriented and very hard working. In Germany families unfortunately aren’t so close knit as in Italy. And the way of driving is very different, in Germany there are many more rules on the roads.

What are your favorite things to do in Florence specifically?

Marvel at the beautiful architecture. 🤩

Where is the best area to live in, in Florence?

A bit outside of the city in the countryside. It’s quieter and the costs are lower.

How much money do you need to live comfortably in Florence?

It depends on what you are comfortable with. It is however not a cheap place to live.

Was it easy making friends and meeting people?

It’s not easy making friends at all. So it might be easier, if you already know someone who is living in Italy.

What has been the hardest aspect of living in Florence?

The differences in mentality.

Final Thoughts

Are there any experiences there that you are particularly proud of or that surprised you?

I’m proud of learning the language and managing everyday life.

What does the future of Florence look like?

I don’t know. Let’s ask a fortune cookie!

What are your plans for the future?
