Fuxian Lake is the second deepest lake in China. It is 2-3 hours south of Kunming, and it honestly feels like a breath of fresh air. Because of the recent discovery of underwater buildings, it is believed that there was once an ancient kingdom which to this day remains sunken in its profound blue waters. There are sand beaches so it’s perfect for a chill day, and you can hike up the mountains to a temple with a view of the mysterious water. If you didn’t know better, you’d be fooled and think it’s an actual sea! Around the lake there are small villages, resorts with hotels and sea-food restaurants. We personally chose to go to Luchong Scenic area (禄充风景区) in the village, which was less touristy than other parts of the lake and it looked gorgeous!
- Enjoy a picnic by the lake
- Rent a boat
- Hike and explore the temples
- Eat fresh sea food
- Drive or walk around the lake to visit the villages
How to get there
In order to reach this place, you will need a taxi (Didi app). To pay a bit less, you can take the metro to a railway station and get it from outside the city, but in my experience, save yourself the trouble, just get a taxi. To come back, take a regular taxi for 20RMB to Chengjiang city railway station and get a taxi to go back home. The taxi to Kunming City takes about an hour, for about 200RMB ($23 USD).
Where to stay
There are hotels around the lake, but we personally struggled to find one because of covid times so we stayed at the Grand Park Hotel in Kunming. I am sure that as you read this, you must have way more options than we did!
