Tianmen 天门 (literally Heaven Door) is only accessible by one of the longest cable cars in the world. You take it in the city near Downtown Zhangjiajie, so you ride over buildings, the train station, and the Zhangjiajie National Park which I thought was pretty cool. It covers 7,455 meters and takes about 30 minutes to get to the top of the mountain. Several times on this ride I thought “OK we arrived”, but then it would take us higher and higher each time, allowing us to see more of this gorgeous place.
Sidenote: No drone allowed, you’ll have to leave it downstairs before you get on the cable car and pick it up later. Keep in mind that when you go down, you won’t be taken back to the entrance stop, so you’ll have to take an extra free shuttle to get back there.

Once at the top of the Tianmen Mountain, you can go to Fairy Peak and check out the views. You can’t really go wrong here. I hope you brought a lunch for your picnic, but you can also buy snacks at the top. The food options are cheap but very limited.
No matter what you do, DO NOT MISS the glass skywalk, it’s definitely a memorable experience to see the forest under your feet. Believe me, you’ll quickly forget those ugly non slippery shoes they make you wear for your security!

Then go to the Stairway to heaven. Here you will come through a side of the mountain, get under the elevated arch and walk down the stairs on the other side. The views, again, are splendid. At the bottom, plan to stop for a while. You can get some coffee and visit souvenir shops before you wrap up your day.
This was the most unforgettable part of my trip to Zhangjiajie, so I hope you won’t skip it ♡
